Description

From the era of silent movies through present day, Universal Pictures has been regarded as the home of the monsters. The Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection showcases all of the original films featuring the most iconic monsters in motion picture history including Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Phantom of the Opera and Creature from the Black Lagoon. Starring some of the most legendary actors including Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains and Elsa Lanchester in the roles that they made famous, these films set the standard for a new horror genre with revolutionary makeup, mood-altering cinematography and groundbreaking special effects. Featuring hours of revealing bonus features, these landmark movies defined the horror genre and are still regarded as some of the most unforgettable characters ever to be filmed.

Notes from the Community

Instead of making one concise Blu-ray set of their Classic Monsters series, Universal just combined all the individual sets of each monster (four of which have been previously released on their own) and threw them together in a box along with a single film, 1943s Phantom of the Opera. Its the same as they did when they released this combined set on standard dvd a few years earlier. As then, this complete Blu-ray set actually contains 37 movies (40 if you count the 3D versions in the Creature set and the Spanish Dracula), with some movies appearing on as many as 3 different individual sets. As stated in several other negative reviews, Universal played it on the cheap by compressing the two latter Creature films onto one disc instead of giving Revenge of the Creature its full due 1080p 2D and 3D presentations on its own separate disc. This seriously lowered the resolution for both films. Also, if inclusion of the 1943 Phantom of the Opera was necessary, why not make it a collection package also by including the 1925 silent version, which is much more of a classic than the 1943 remake. Im not going to condemn the entire package because all the films, with the exception of Revenge of the Creature, look terrific on blu-ray. But because of these cost-cutting maneuvers, they are serious enough to knock off a couple stars in my rating. 3 stars. This set assembles all six of the separately available Complete Legacy Collection Blu-rays + the well made, yet non-essential 1943 version of Phantom of the Opera. If you have bought these Blu-rays separately, the booklet or the nice box that comes with this set does not justify double dipping. That being said, this is a really great collection of Universals monster movies between 1931 and 1956, but it is not without controversy. One could argue that Universal Classic Monsters Complete 30-Film Collection is a misnomer because it omits 1920s silent films such as the original Phantom of the Opera. It also omits films such as The Black Cat and The Raven which, while theyre Universal horror movies from that time frame, they lack the classic monsters and motifs of the other films. The same can be said for later films such as Cult of The Cobra, The Monolith Monsters or The Deadly Mantis. Perhaps these films will someday merit another expansive Blu-ray collection like this. Are you listening Universal?People may also complain about the inclusion of the Abbott and Costello films as being non-canon. I am glad theyre included…especially because Bela Lugosi finally got the chance to reprise his iconic Drácula role on screen. Theyre at best pretty funny and at worst mostly harmless, so why complain? The biggest knocks against this set are that its not significantly less expensive than buying all the sets separately and that it doesnt add anything new beyond what has already been available. If you do the math though, youll be spending about $5 per movie (not counting all the documentaries) which isnt bad at all.I bought this set because I only had a few of the individual Legacy Collection sets on DVD and none on Blu-ray. Knowing that I will watch many of these movies over and over again, I felt like making the investment.Even though there is nothing new here, Im still quite satisfied. The lack of new features and the omission of the original Phantom of the Opera (which would have fit easily as a special feature) is what holds my rating down to four stars. Apart from those quibbles, its a really nice set. I own all the older Universal Monster Movie Legacy Collection on DVD. I just got the new 2018 Universal Classic Monsters: Complete 30-Film Collection, it arrived today. I havent watched them all yet, obviously, but I did comparison against my old collection on DVD. This new collection on blu-ray is amazingly better in picture quality. No dust or scratches can be seen, which the DVDs are full of. And the movies are crisp and sharp, unlike the DVDs which are much murkier. I would highly recommend this collection to anyone who loves these old monster movies. And the packaging is solid as well. If you add up how much it would cost to buy all these discs separately, this package is worth the money.

ThermoPro TP03 Digital Instant Read Meat Thermometer

Notes from the Community

About 3 years ago I saved up and bought a Thermapen for about $100 because the reviews were excellent. I have used it ever since, and love it. But this week I saw an instant(?) thermometer on sale at Amazon for $10.99, and I wanted one for travel. So, I took a chance, and got it yesterday. (Pic below- the new one is red). As soon as I got it I wanted to test the speed and accuracy. I tried it, side by side, on some bread just coming out of the oven. They showed the same temp within a second of each other. Tried it again this morning on boiling water for my tea. Exactly the same temp in exactly the same amount of time. I dont know if it will hold up long-term, but Im really happy ! I am a big fan of Americas Test Kitchen. They do an extensive amount of reviews and testing of kitchen products. One of their reviews was for a meat thermometer. They recommended Thermapen which cost about $100. I little too steep for my budget. One of the reviews on this ThermoPro thermometer was from an owner of the $100 Thermapen and did a direct comparison between the ThermoPro and the Thermapen. They stated their performance (accuracy and speed) was nearly the same. So for a nearly 10 to 1 price difference, I went with the ThermoPro. I was not disappointed. It works great from reading meat temperatures to reading hot oil temps the thermometer works great. I would recommend this thermometer to anyone. Bought my first one on 6/8 and liked it so much I purchased a separate one for baking on 6/30. Tonight I was trying to take the temperature of my chicken and realized one entire column of ink (lights?) was out. A friend used it this week when he was over so I thought maybe he dropped it so I pulled out my baking one and same thing. An entire column of ink was gone. Im the only one using that one so I know it wasnt dropped. Its pretty pathetic that both thermometers barely lasted three months. Not worth the money IMO. I like this thermometer. One of the things I like best about it is that it takes a regular AAA battery. I will not have to buy a much more expensive button type battery like my last thermometer used. Worked for about a month, then started to display either 400+ temps or XX.X.Anyone have an idea of how to get a replacement for this under warranty? Liked the simplicity of use. Quick readout. Multi angle prob helps a lot too.UNFPRTUNATLY I just went through my 3rd thermopro tp03a. First one quit working within the year. I still liked the function so went ahead and bought 2 more since th price was just $12 well 3 months later and now the 2nd and 3rd have ALL quick working. Tried changing batteries and still no luck. The last one turns on but is off by +10 degrees when compared to 2 different style of thermometers which read identical at 150F. Thermopro now reads 160F. I loved these but apparently its time to look for a different thermometer. Wish I kept the warranty info, and I cant find any company contact number online. Hey out there. Just be aware that you get what you pay for. This unit lasted just 6 months before the metal probe/tube came uncrimped from the plastic base. It worked fine when it was whole, quick temp indication. But even though I was careful in handling it and cleaning it, the fundamental cheapness of the product overcame my TLC. So, avoid it, pay a bit more and get a unit that wont get the come aparts. Oh, when I tried to reinstall the probe, no worky. Big big numbers on the display!!!! I wanted to use this digital thermometer to measure the internal temperature of bread loaves that I bake every week. It has a nice thin temperature probe that helps to avoid large holes in the crust which detract from the finished product. However, the probe is not accurate. It reads about 10 degrees F low. I verified this via boiling water temperature. There is no way to adjust the calibration. Ten degrees is significant when baking.Wasted money.

Received this on Wednesday. It worked for two days, then the display faded lighter and lighter and now its Sunday (the 4th day of use, ever), there is no display other than a blue background. Tried new batteries. Tried different surface. Tried everything. Doesnt work. So, its a completely useless paperweight. We are returning it. What a waste.Update:The seller immediately refunded our money and sent us a new scale free of charge. The new scale works great. It looks like the LED crystals were probably damaged in shipping, which isnt the sellers fault. Glad to see that this seller cares about the end customer experience at any cost. This depression piece of equipment has neither Mercy not Remorse. Empathy nor Conscience. Love not Regret. It will take days of heart felt best efforts and reminds how you constantly cheat on your diet. It will haunt your very soul offering to relieve your guilty but will continually betraying your best hopes. It will ever give your spouse ever increasing reasons to give you blander and leaner food. It will replace the once mounds of bacon and douhnuts with carrots and carrots and even more carrots. All with fall before its ever growing power and reign and nothing nothing will be able to stop it…Kids like it though, had a pretty led back light. **Update - after I left my review, the company contacted me and offered me a full refund. So I have changed my rating to 3 stars. Great customer service, just still a bit leary of the scale.Like so many others said, our scale exploded. I was in the room next to the bathroom where the scale is kept, and all of a sudden I heard a huge bang. I went in and this is what I found. Nothing was near it or touching it. Im baffled as to how that could happen, but Im just glad that no one was in the bathroom when it happened. I would not recommend this product. We have been using this Etekcity digital scale for a year now in our our home are very pleased with the scale so far. We had purchased this scale to replace our previous Sunbeam manual , Spring loaded bathroom scale which was horribly inaccurate and deliberated for a considerable amount of time between this scale and the FitBit Aria smart scale . In the end because of the huge price difference and very positive reviews on this scale made us go with this oneDesign, Construction & Build-------------------------------------- The scale is feels heavy for its size mainly due to the thick, monolithic glass sheet stepping surface of the scale- All our fears or cracked or broken glass due to stepping on it frequently, bumping or dropping it were unfounded in the past year ( we did all of them !) , so its definitely sturdy and well built- The two tone black-sliver finish on the scale looks ultra modern and chic- The digital readouts are large and backlit in a pleasant not-too-strong blue which is visible both in light and complete darkness. I often check my weight on the scale during midnight bathroom visits.Long Term Accuracy---------------------------- When we initially purchased this scale i used a 10 lb Rice bag to measure its accuracy and it was always within 0.2 lb of 10 lb with repeated tests, which is very accurate for a digital scale and well suited for measuring body weight- Another pointer to the accuracy of this scale is that the weight that we got for our toddler son from his pediatrician using a professional balance scale matches the results we got from this scaleI tried the same accuracy test today after a whole year of use & abuse:10 lb Basmati Rice Bag : Scale Measured = 10.4 lb6lb Dumbbells : Scale Measured = 5.8 lbAs you can see that even after one year the scale is fairly accurate , for all I know it might be 100% accurate as well as I have no way of certifying that the 10lb rice bag or the dumbbells are infact their true stated weights.Battery Life----------------- The scale is still using the two original AAA that came with the package even after a year of frequent, daily use so Id say its great!Cons----------- About the only con about this scale is that the glass surface, being glass, needs frequent cleaning as it shows water stains. we usually wipe it with a damp cloth once every week so its not too bad. If you are going worry about keeping it spotless always then youll going to have a hard time :)Overall we are very pleased with our purchase and couple of our family friends have also purchased it after seeing it in our home and can highly recommend this scale if your are looking for a good looking , inexpensive and accurate digital scale. This scale constantly gives me different readings. For example: If i put the scale down, let it zero, then get on and weigh myself i can weigh 196.2. Then i pick it up and move it to another area of our wood floor(all flat!) i get 195. I have had up to 4lbs off just by picking it up and moving it a few inches away to get a secondary measure. I cant trust the readings! How do i know which one is right. Disappointed in this product and will be returning it. I dont know what Im doing wrong, but every time I step on this scale it tells me Im only 89 lbs. Im 130lbs. I tried every way to fix it, but it wont work right. I definitely do not recommend this scale. Always go with the more original. This scale was horrible. I wanted to replace my old scale with this cool modern design. I went to test the Elekcity by placing a bag of cat food that weighed 11lbs.The Elekcity was right on the mark at 11lbs and so was my old scale. I went to weigh myself and I was over 2 pounds heavier on the Elekcity than my old scale. I wasnt weighing myself on carpet either I was on tile. To be fair I moved my old scale in the same place where I weighed myself with the Elekcity. I moved both scales around my bathroom floor in six different places, in the center of the tile so that the scales were on the center of the tile and and not going over the edge touching the grout lines. The scales were on even surfaces in all six places. I did calibrate the Elekcity too. So, after the comparisons of both scales save your money the Elekcity is junk I sent it back the same day I received it. Also the Elekcity showed my weight 10lbs lighter it gave me several different readings. Junk! Junk! Junk!

Magazine is not as good as it used to be. Also RD auto renewed my subscription early without notice. Still working to cancel it. It is not the old Readers Digest. It seems politically flavored & preachy, and reads like one writer does all the writing. Im sorry to say the Quotes sections is horrible. The true stories are good and the humor at work, life and military are still funny. I love it accept, it deleats my magazines. I sometimes do noit get to read an issue because Im too busy. I paid for it why then does the app delete my past issues, even if unread? Shame! Will have to cancel. I have always enjoyed Readers Digest. But I never subscribed because I have a bad habit of hoarding magazines that I like, then eventually have to give them away or throw them away, so for years I only read R.D. in the Doctors or Dentists office (my parents subscribed when I was growing up). Now that I can get it electronically, and at such a great price, I took advantage of that. It took a little bit of experimenting to familiarize with the navigation, because it doesnt work the same way as with books; but its pretty simple once you get used to it. HOWEVER, I just got my 2nd month issue. I had not finished reading my first issue, and although I was able to locate the 1st issue in my newsstand library, when I clicked on it, it tells me waiting to download but never does, so I cant get back to previous issue to finish reading or to re-read previously enjoyed articles. I see this as a serious flaw in the subscription process. If this Isnt corrected, I may not renew my subscription when the time comes. LOVE the digest. Am super bummed to learn that I cant get it on my Kindle fire. Most puzzling. Cant imagine what prevents it. up to 1/3 of this magazine is pure ads. there is very little actual article content. compare to decades older RD mgazines and you will understand what i mean. cancelled subscription. i am not paying for more ads HEY!!!!! Where have all my issues gone? This is B.S. I paid for them they should be in the cloud. Why wasnt I notified about this mass dumping of magazines? How about a refund for past unread issues. I subscribed to RD so I could read at my leisure now they are gone. You owe everyone an explanation. Growing up, RD was a staple of literary genius. I think all the retirees are rolling over in their graves after what RD has become. Its boring, they make grammatical errors (or should I say errors since they misuse said sky comma all the time now), and worst of all they are POLITICAL. So sad.

Notes from the Community

The expiration date was only 1 month away. Are you kidding me? 1 month? I returned it and I got a new one which had the EXACTLY SAME expiration date. I usually bought this in the Asian market back in Chicago and the expiration date was usually 1 year away. CJ Foods America is selling you almost stale, non-sellable items which should be thrown away. Dont buy. Rice that arrived on Septemver 16 had a best by date of Oct 6 2017? Only good for 20 days? Is this part of your strategy?? I wish that I had been able to try this rice before being stuck with the remaining 11 of these after I didnt like the first one. I definitely wont be buying it again. Im really surprised that there are so many good reviews. It doesnt really have any flavor, Im sorry to say, but it reminds me a little bit of paste. It is very moist, to the point where I feel like if it was rice that I had cooked myself, then I must have added too much water. The good thing about it is that its convenient, just pop it in the microwave for 90 seconds. Just dont expect too much when the 90 seconds is up. Words cannot express how much I love these little rice bowls. Perfect portion, perfect stickiness and so incredibly easy to make. Dont even need to add water. Easy to just throw into the hubbys bag for his lunches with whatever batch entree i make for the next couple of days. All you have to do is open the top an inch and pop it into the microwave. Its so convenient Im not even using my ridiculously expensive rice cooker hahaha. I get a case of this every month for my subscribe and save items. Awesome! Its quick and easy! And, to me at least, is just as good as any cooker or stove cooked rice without the wait time and need to get measurements right. All you need to do is peel back the lid to the dotted line and cook in the microwave for 1 min 30 sec. I cook mine for 1 min 45 sec and came out great.People who complain of strange smell and taste might have got a bad batch or cooked these for too long. 1min 45sec was sufficient for me. Only 15 sec passed their recommend time and no strange smell and taste. Taste like leftover re-heated rice. Not as good as fresh cooker rice, but still tasty and good enough for a meal. These are smaller than I thought they would be. If you eat rice as part of a main meal, you would probably use 2 of these bowls to get the quantity youre used to.Overall an excellent product for those who want quick and easy rice to eat with their meals, but dont eat rice enough to warrant buying a cooker and huge bags of rice. I just finished my first bowl of this fantastic product and I am astounded by the quality. In 90 seconds I had a steaming bowl of perfectly cooked white rice. I added a heaping ladle full of chili and had a filling and delicious meal.I am an Army Brat, and spent some time in Japan when I was a boy and one of my fondest memories was Japanese style curry and sticky white rice S&B Golden Curry Sauce with Vegtables, Hot, 8.1-Ounce Boxes (Pack of 5). My family bought a rice cooker, and white rice has been a favorite of mine ever since. This product rivals the quality of rice straight from a rice cooker. I plan to try the Nishiki brand Nishiki Cooked White Rice, 7.4-Ounce (Pack of 6) of this same product type as I have a brand loyalty and it is only slightly more expensive, however, barring my own brand preferences, this product is top notch. The rice is packaged pre-cooked, and all you need to do is peel back the lid a bit and microwave it for 90 seconds…thats it…and presto, hot white rice. I have read in another review that you can control the desired level of stickiness by how much or little you peel the top back. This first bowl, I followed the instructions exactly and peeled the top back to the printed line and the result was a medium sticky rice. I personally prefer a mega sticky rice, so I will experiment, however, because each grain came out perfectly chewy and separated, I can easily see this product used as a sushi rice where those characteristics are paramount. I usually eat my rice with chili or curry, so I prefer it stickier so as to not become thoroughly saturated with the liquids. The amazing thing about the product is that it can be used in various ways depending on how you cook it.I will definitely purchase this product again! I decided to try CJ Hetbahn White Rice after trying a number of other white rice brands. I was hopefully to find a soft rice that is not sticky in consistency. Unfortunately this rice is not only sticky, but it also forms clumps which make it difficult to eat. These rice bowls are gluten free and vegan. The ingredients are simple: Water, Rice, and Glucono Delta Lactone. This rice is a product of South Korea and is not manufactured or processed in the United States. I did not mind the South Korea aspect of this product since most rice is grown outside of the United States to begin with. The cooking time on the rice bowl states one and a half minutes. The instructions on Amazon state two minutes. When this rice is cooked for one and a half minutes it is extremely clumpy and sticky. In addition, it also tastes underdone. When this rice is cooked for two minutes I often find it over cooked and that it has a burn like smell. In terms of taste, this rice is the closest thing to regular rice that Ive found in a rice bowl. The rice is authentic sticky rice. Unfortunately I was not looking for a sticky rice, so I am going to have to keep going to find the perfect rice in the future. I am a lazy person.I enjoy rice, but I dislike the process of making good rice (washing/rinsing/soaking), and cleaning out a rice cooker always seems like a pain.Enter: microwave rice. This stuff tastes almost exactly like freshly cooked rice, is shelf-stable, and just generally makes me really happy.I have made oyakodon, inarizushi, and kareraisu with it, and its all good. Im also planning on trying to make onigiri, because the rice is perfectly sticky.I plan to never run out.

Notes from the Community

I bought the very first Martha Stewart Living back in the 1990s and thought it was amazing. Looked forward to it each month for years before I moved on. This last December, I decided to try another subscription. What a massive disappointment. The magazine is thin. Good Things is gone. No crafts, diy, or decorating. Almost nothing about home (unless you count cleaning, whoop-di-doo). Mostly its ads or ads masquerading as articles (as in buy this product, buy that product, blah-blah-blah). I suppose if youre into cooking and beauty advise, you can get enough out of it to make it worthwhile. Im halfway through the year and wont be renewing. Just got my first mag of Martha Stewart Living…Way more ads than readable content. I wouldnt want to watch a show thats 90% commercials and really dont want to read a magazine thats 90% ads! I USED to love this mag. What happened? Its littered with ads, and skimpy on good content. The articles used to be longer and excellently written, with arrestingly lush photography. The old magazines were keepers. So sorry to see this mag going the way of most other readables in the world…catering to the video generation who seem to have the reading attention span of circus fleas. The issues years ago were bigger and better. These are thin and not as good as before, I wont be renewing my subscription. Yes we know the magazine and nobody would ever order it if it was terrible ( though comparing the lest two years editions versus the ones published years before the reduction in topics, articles and number of pages is significant).I would like to advice you ordering from Meredith: dont!!!!In the age of Internet, and extreme leve and amount of electronic data processing - 3 MONTHS of processing is ridiculous and unacceptable!!!They process payment in seconds!Lots to work on Meredith! Its cheap so no complaints about that, a few good ideas and the recipes looked interesting. Everything in the mag can be found on the website. As other reviewers have noted, it has a ton of ads etc. The quality of the images and paper have declined but I assume this is due to the fact that magazines are less popular than they were years ago. Mine arrived ripped as it was quite delicate. It was quite thin too, I remember this mag once being pretty fat, especially for a holiday issue…was hoping for more gardening and decorating images and ideas. I used to subscribe to Living years ago, but stopped due to lack of free time. I picked it up again, but cant say Im impressed. The recipes require non-standard ingredients or dont appeal to me and the craft projects were uninspired. I do better with Pinterest feeds. In fact, the only recipe I kept from the magazine was from an advertisement. Have had subscriptions to this magazine many times off and on through-out the years and wanted to give it another shot with the $5 a year deal. I have already cancelled my auto re-new. LOTS of ads! And I mean lots! It is worth $5 a year in my opinion, but I would not pay any more than that! Just not worth it for what I was looking for, in regards to recipes and home decorating. But a girl can dream of having a home like Marthas!

I love the camera. It looks really nice, and works well.My only problem is the so-called instructions. They are REALLY poorly translated from Chinese, to the point of some paragraphs being completely incomprehensible. And the instructions are WAY too minimal. Anybody up for studying how the camera operates, how the features work, and writing a decent instruction manual?? 😁 I was pleasantly surprised at how well-built this dash cam seems. It feels solid in the hand, and, though its not heavy, it feels substantial. Additionally, the functionality of it seems to be pretty intuitive. I could turn it on and get it recording without referencing the users guide, which is good, because the users guide is almost useless. Oh, it doesnt come with a memory card, and is useless without one. The battery only lasts a few minutes, too, but they tell you up front that its only for backing up videos and the camera isnt intended to run on battery. So, all in all, Im pretty pleased with it, and may buy a second one. This product is an addition to my insurance policy. It is a great help when someone dings my car and starts pointing I did it. California is famous for insurance scams involving accidents Im not paranoid just careful. Plus I want a memory card. When I received this camera and unpacked it I was totally impressed, the quality is super for the price. Works great and very easy to use and understand. I give this product a 10. If you need a car cam this is it. Small enough to put in front of mirror not intrusive. Beautiful 1080p with auto correct. Easy to set up and it automatic once set up you dont have to think about it again unless you need it one of my best buys great product price was very inexpensive for quality So far, so good! I hope I never need the camera footage! This is an excellent product. Im buying a second one for my wifes car

Update: I had already written a one-star review, but their refusal to honor not auto renewing would have dropped it to one-star anyway. Amazon customer service failed me on this. I guess Im an involuntary lifetime subscriber now.I like their website, so decided back in June to support them with a subscription. Ive received two issues of the magazine since then. I wasnt terribly impressed by the content compared to whats freely available on their website. I wont be renewing my subscription. I was somewhat disappointed with the magazine since December when I received this subscription as a gift. The magazines I pickup at the newsstand are large and beautiful and have mostly recipes and few ads. However the subscription gives you skinny magazines with lots of ads AND the last straw was delivering it via a plastic bag thrown on my driveway like a piece of junk mail? What in the world? I responded with questions to Bon Appetite via all their social channels & received crickets! horrible customer service. And why oh why are they adding yet more plastic to the environment by using this delivery method via regular mail. The website is actually great and you can access that and their youtube channel for free. Dont waste your money with a subscription. Theres very few recipes in this magazine. I used to really enjoy it. Nice pictures to look at, and amazing recipes! If you like the magazine you should check out their YouTube channel, very interesting stuff there. I found the wide variety of summertime recipes interesting. I did not see any that would be easy to make without special purchasing or planning. They are not the kind of thing that a single person can indulge in. I love the variety of recipes and the articles are interesting. I love trying new foods and cuisine from around the world, and this is a great way to do it. Their website is great too; it helped me learn how to care for and use my cast iron pan. I definitely recommend Bon Appetit for adventurous cooks. Full of ads and not alot of recipes. It used to be better magazine for cooks. I love this magazine, I am the cook mainly. It had a good Macarron receipt in it and my wife has been watching to much food channel. It was only $5.00 or a year and you cant beat that.
